The History of the Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 is simply an icon in the automobile world. First released to massive success in 1957, this small-yet-powerful vehicle was, and is, the perfect combination of style and convenience. Whether in its vintage or modern version, the Fiat 500 has stood the test of time.

The people’s car

Known to the Italians as the “cinquecento,” the Fiat 500 was first produced by the company in 1957. Almost 4 million of these cars rolled off assembly lines before production ceased in 1975, setting a precedent that would be widely imitated by other manufacturers. The history of the Fiat 500 is one in which aesthetics and durability combined in the right place at the right time. In the midst of the complicated economy of the post-war, there was a need for an affordable and practical city car, and the Fiat 500 filled this role to great success. The idea of a convenient, smaller-sized vehicle is taken for granted now, but the Fiat 500 was one of the first cars of this type to be released with such mass appeal and market influence.

Style and durability

An aesthetic achievement right from the outset, the original Nuova 500 would eventually become an icon. This two-door coupe also notably featured a rear-mounted engine that allowed for greater maneuverability in an urban setting. Before the line was retired, Fiat created 6 different models of the immensely popular car, beginning with the Nuova 500 and ending with the R model, first available to the public in 1972, in addition to a number of station wagon, van, and sport versions. These cars featured a remarkable fuel efficiency, and the Fiat 500 was the star of a number of high-profile long-distance driving achievements. The most recent of these took place in 2005, when a 1973 Fiat 500 made the journey from Bari, Italy, to Beijing.

A vintage classic gets a make-over

Long coveted by collectors and motoring enthusiasts, the legacy of the Fiat 500 is far from over. In fact, in 2007, on the 50th anniversary of the car’s first entrance onto the market, the company celebrated by creating a new, current version of the 500. Retaining the style and flair of the original 1957 Nuova 500, the updated vehicle replaces the original rear-mounted engine with a modern front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive system. In September of 2015, Fiat added to the car’s legacy by producing another revamped 500 in the form of the Fiat 500 Vintage 57 model, one that is greatly inspired by the very first model, and even features a new engine, renovated interior, and technology designed to reduce emissions.

For owners of a Fiat, it’s important to check the particulate filter for diesel vehicles, as it is essential to controlling emissions and engine efficiency. The 500 continues to enjoy an exceptional level of popularity among fans of this stylish, small-yet-potent vehicle.
